The Winterslag mine site is an important piece of industrial heritage which is an evenly matched competitor with international industrial industriële sites. As a visitor you immediately fall under the spell of the monumental buildings, of the strong architecture and the remainder of the unique interior. That is why the city council wants to cherish this industrial artefact by putting it to a new and durable use, where respect for the past is coupled with a new use in the future.
The former mine site was renamed as C-mine. C-Mine focuses on creativity and creation. This happens through the development of a cluster of 4 basic functions, which, through synergy and being interwoven, are a special added bonus:
1. Culture
A new cultural centre will be constructed on the site, including two new performance halls, an exhibition centre, meeting rooms, and a polyvalent room in the former machine building. This monumental, historical industrial industriële building will be like an expansion tank for the new rooms that will be connected to the old building.
2. Tourism and recreation
C-Mine will be developed as a site with great value as a tourist attraction. There will be a regional tourist visitors' centre and an underground mine track, where visitors can get aquainted with the history of the mine and its impact on the current creativity that is apparent in Genk.
In 2005 the cinema complex was opened on the site Euroscoop. The 10 screens were fully integrated in the old mining building geïntegreerd.
3. Creative economy
C-Mine will be an inspirational centre, work place, and en place of business for innovative and creative businesses.
The 'transformation factory' will be a development centre for new innovative and creative thinking processes and product development. The office building of the former mining seat will be renovated and equipped to be a communal building for businesses and an icubator for starting and young businesses in the creative economy.
The first creative man who have found his place at C-Mine is the designer/artist Piet Stockmans.
4. Education
Education plays an important part in the generation of creativity. That is why the Media- en Design Academy, a department of the KHLim, has chosen its new location at C-Mine, for courses in product design, audiovisual design and the visual arts.
In short, in a beautiful industrial decor Winterslag allows you to experience its mining past in a modern way.
