Ado Hamelryck (Halle, °1941) trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Later he became an art teacher at the Limburg Catholic College, for the department of Audio Visuals and Visual Arts.
Ado Hamelryck's work is minimal, but not minimalist. In his paintings, drawings and reliefs, this artist limits himself to the repetitive application of black track on a support. The apparent monchrome black surfaces that appear create an ususpectedly rich texture and tonality.
'Matter, space and time are very important in my work. The feel of the pen coming from the inkwell, through the air onto the paper, after which it can run dry during 'writing' , is a filling of these three dimensions. When I 'write' I think further into the space as well, because the support on which I write my signs, imposes a material limitation. Even if my 'writing' has no literary content. '
