In about 1523 the clothmakers guild (weavers) of Hasselt built a cloth mill on the Stiemerbeek. The mill was responsible for 'fulling' the woven cloth or making it more supple and more voluminous.
From 1645 the mill was renovated as a rope making mill, and ropes of flax and hemp were produced, and oil from rape- and coleseed. In 1834 the mill was transformed into a grain mill. It worked until 1955 and was transformed into a cafe in 1966. The result is a intensely modified and restored building.
After the restoration of the moving parts, the mill has been back in production since 1987.
In 1995 the mill became the very first protected monument in Genk.
The Slagmolen is only open during the annual Mills Day in June.
