The Maten, a unique, protected 300 ha nature reserve, is one of the most beautiful in Flanders. It is a mix of beautiful ponds with all the typical Kempish vegetation.
The most important landscape types are:
- Dunes, with heather blooming in August;
- Ponds and swamps in the lower, wetter parts;
- Swamp woods;
- Pastures;
The region is very important for the birds that breed there or that rest there on their migration south.
Accessibility:
- Not suitable for wheelchairs, difficult for prams and pushchairs.
- Sturdy footwear recommended during wet weather.
- Because of the vulnerable nature of the region dogs are only allowed on the
green walking routes (More info see under 'private outings').
- The reserve is partly closed to protect breeding birds. A walk in the accessible part of
the region is possible at all times! You can request a nature guide as well.
Tip ! Regular walks: every first Sunday of the month (not in januari and februari).
Meet at the parking area on the Slagmolenweg side at 9 am. The walk concludes at about 12 pm. Bookings are not required.
