Right in the middle of Limburg's greenery, we see the golden sheen of the 5 domes of the Ukranian-Orthodox parochial church of Genk. Dedicated to the holy Archangel Michael the Archistrategist, this beautiful temple is known among all the Ukranian-Orthodox believers, all over the free world. Because this church was built to commemorate a thousand years of Christendom in Ukraine.
From a height of 5 meters, a shining white, robust Wolodimyr keeps an eye on the goings-on, while the clock in the sturdy seat is always ready to toll.
You reach the church through the courtyard. After a few minutes of dumbfounded surprise, you realise this is indeed a church and not a heavenly paradise! The glittering gold of the iconostase (painted by the priest Jos Opdebeeck) is overwhelming as are the depictions of Christ and the Mother of God, the scenes of the birth of Christ, the numerous angels and saints, the exquisite chandelier with twelve-apostle icons, the candelabras and the beautiful decorations.

With every step in the church you discover new things and gradually you come to realise how much love the Belgian Ukranians must have felt for their country of origin to erect this building.
