For a long time muslems practiced their religion, the Islam, in improvised prayer rooms. Halfway through the 90s, new mosques moskeeën were built. The main reason was to provide prayer- and meeting facilties for the current and future generations of muslems.
Winterslag's Moroccan mosque is a good example.
The mosque was named after Hasaan Ebno Tabit, poet and spokesman of the prophet Mohammed. This name was chosen because the muslem community wants to be mindful of Hasaan Ebno Tabit's example and because, just like the poet in his day, it wants to be the spokesperson for the prophet.
The mosque has some typical Moroccan characteristics. Indoors we see various decorative ornaments made of plaster. The plaster ornaments were made on site with templates and fixed onto the ceiling. The rather low ceiling with the pillars is also typically Moroccan. Apart from the payer rooms, the mosque also comprises a classroom, a library, meeting room, a socio-cultural room for youngsters and a dwelling for the imam.
