All that glitters is not gold, as the old saying goes. In Limburg this wisdom went topsy turvy in the night of the 1st of August 1901. The first coal was mined that night. The discovery of coal led to the establishment of 7 mines. No less than three were in the vicinity of Genk i.e Winterslag, Waterschei and Zwartberg. After the closure of the Limburg mines a number of buildings were preserved.
